An Ode to Delicateness

I was stunned by Elie Saab’s Spring/Summer 2013 show for the Paris Couture Fashion Week.

Naming his collection An Ode to Delicateness, Saab could not be more spot on. As always he fails to disappoint his eager audience.

A brilliant collection, I thought Elie Saab outdid himself yet again with a collection that is almost painfully delicate, and endlessly feminine. We’ll go over some of the most striking highlights of the show.

The always-glamorous burlesque performer Dita Von Teese was one of the most noticeable attendees of the show. In a glittery coat over a knee-length dress, Von Teese impressed in classic black.

The show kicked off with angelic white. The first shade of Saab’s choice. This piece is is a long-sleeve block-white with subtle embellishments on the chest.

Image

Saab experimented with cuts, although always keeping it delicate. I am in love with the the embellished top on this piece.

Classic was in, and the sequins here are just a preview of what is to come in this collection in terms of glamour and shine.

Then came the pastel blues of the collection. With an almost aquatic theme, the gowns were embroidered so delicately in coralesque patterns with shimmering blue crystal.

I love the sleeves on this piece; romantic, dreamy, nostalgic almost.

Again with the daring cuts, I love the embroidered neckline and we can see how Saab kept it consistent with the aquatic embroidery on the most delicate of fabrics.

Image

A more floral theme was also observed on some of the gowns in the show. Using 3D flowers on top of sheer fabric made the gowns look ethereal and floaty.

Image

I loved the clustered crystals on the neck and sleeves of this piece. Glamour at its most refined.

Image

The most striking part of the show was when the dusty lavender gowns went in. In my opinion, they were the most delicate of all pieces and truly encapsulated what the theme of the show was about. They looked almost too delicate for words.

Image

The way these dresses moved was unbelievable. Very fairy-like and dreamy.

A touch of peachy gold warmed up the collection.

Image

What I found refreshing was that, towards the end of the show, Saab starts giving the collection an edge. Out with the pale pastels and in with the more striking colors, just to avoid making the collection too sweet. In came the ladies in red.

Image

With baroque black detailing over soft florals, Saab kept showing the darker, edgier side of the collection. I love the clash in this piece.

Image

Of course, in came the ladies in all black, but the pieces did not lack the subtlety, craft, and delicateness of previous designs. All what changes was the color.

Image

The sheer fabrics made the black gowns look like ethereal smoke on the runway.

And of course, last came the highlight of the show: the bride. With the most delicate of lace and striking baroque patterns, this bridal dress incorporates simplicity and complication at once. The fabrics give it that clean, luxurious look and the detailing is extremely poetic.

Defining luxury, An Ode to Delicateness  was an ethereal collection that does not disappoint Saab’s clientele. Always proving to be the master of his own craft, Elie Saab shines again in Paris Fashion Week.

Looks Of The Decades: 1940s and 1950s

1940’s

The classic eyebrow arch becomes the fashion, paired with dark eye shadows, yet lighter than those trendy in the 30’s, thin black or brown eyeliner will smudged and blended to show no edges, and false lashes for the dramatic look. They used to add vaseline over the eye shadows, be they light or dark. A variety of dark colors are still the most popular choices for lipsticks. By the end of the 40’s, women started wearing cherry red lipstick color.

In the following photo, I used a medium brown eye shadow on the model. I accentuated the color with brown liquid eyeliner and false eyelashes. More important, I filled the eyebrows with a dark brown color, and shaped them to look full and arched. I applied a dark lipstick to suggest a dramatic look.

1950’s

From film, to fabrics, clothes and makeup: color is everywhere. The new trend was towards lighter skin, beauty marks, fuller lips, and arched eyebrows like Marilyn Monroe. Eye makeup becomes more customized according to the color of the eyes. Sometimes, the pastel colors were used. A darker color was used at the outside corner of the eye to create depth. To complement the look, black liquid eyeliner was applied; thin first, then thick, then thin again, to end the line. Demi-lash was added to give the eye a sexy and dramatic look. A lot of mascara was also used.

In the following photo, I used a white frosty eye shadow all over the eyelid accompanied by a white pencil inside the eye. I also applied a dark shadow on the side of her eyelid black eyeliner. I also resorted to demi-lashes, beauty marks on the face and to red creamy lipstick to evoke the look of Marilyn Monroe.

Live Your Life In Colors

Blue

As most shades of blue are considered cold colors, it is not advised to use them everyday, unless working on a photo shoot or wearing the color at night. However, when applied sparingly, blue eye shadow might enhance the intensity of brown eyes.

Green

Jade, emerald, or lime green, reflects nature in its most beautiful color. Use the soft shades for all eye colors, and the dark shades preferably for brown and hazel-colored eyes.

Red

A color that is full of life, hot and sexy. I almost exclusively use it as a kip color. However, it is a good ground to draw smoky eyes, especially when used under brown, burgundy and black. The mixture is seductive.

Purple

A very exotic color. When used as an eye shadow, it really accentuates hazel and blue-green eyes. When used with most colors, it gives the impression of having a black eye. Nonetheless, it is very glamorous when used with gold or yellow. The lilac tone looks romantic on a bride with blue eyes, especially if she goes for a natural makeup.
