An Ode to Delicateness

I was stunned by Elie Saab’s Spring/Summer 2013 show for the Paris Couture Fashion Week.

Naming his collection An Ode to Delicateness, Saab could not be more spot on. As always he fails to disappoint his eager audience.

A brilliant collection, I thought Elie Saab outdid himself yet again with a collection that is almost painfully delicate, and endlessly feminine. We’ll go over some of the most striking highlights of the show.

Image

The always-glamorous burlesque performer Dita Von Teese was one of the most noticeable attendees of the show. In a glittery coat over a knee-length dress, Von Teese impressed in classic black.

Image

The show kicked off with angelic white. The first shade of Saab’s choice. This piece is is a long-sleeve block-white with subtle embellishments on the chest.

Image

Saab experimented with cuts, although always keeping it delicate. I am in love with the the embellished top on this piece.

Classic was in, and the sequins here are just a preview of what is to come in this collection in terms of glamour and shine.

Image

Then came the pastel blues of the collection. With an almost aquatic theme, the gowns were embroidered so delicately in coralesque patterns with shimmering blue crystal.

Image

I love the sleeves on this piece; romantic, dreamy, nostalgic almost.

Image

Again with the daring cuts, I love the embroidered neckline and we can see how Saab kept it consistent with the aquatic embroidery on the most delicate of fabrics.

Image

A more floral theme was also observed on some of the gowns in the show. Using 3D flowers on top of sheer fabric made the gowns look ethereal and floaty.

Image

I loved the clustered crystals on the neck and sleeves of this piece. Glamour at its most refined.

Image

The most striking part of the show was when the dusty lavender gowns went in. In my opinion, they were the most delicate of all pieces and truly encapsulated what the theme of the show was about. They looked almost too delicate for words.

Image

The way these dresses moved was unbelievable. Very fairy-like and dreamy.

Image

A touch of peachy gold warmed up the collection.

Image

What I found refreshing was that, towards the end of the show, Saab starts giving the collection an edge. Out with the pale pastels and in with the more striking colors, just to avoid making the collection too sweet. In came the ladies in red.

Image

With baroque black detailing over soft florals, Saab kept showing the darker, edgier side of the collection. I love the clash in this piece.

Image

Of course, in came the ladies in all black, but the pieces did not lack the subtlety, craft, and delicateness of previous designs. All what changes was the color.

Image

The sheer fabrics made the black gowns look like ethereal smoke on the runway.

Image

And of course, last came the highlight of the show: the bride. With the most delicate of lace and striking baroque patterns, this bridal dress incorporates simplicity and complication at once. The fabrics give it that clean, luxurious look and the detailing is extremely poetic.

Defining luxury, An Ode to Delicateness  was an ethereal collection that does not disappoint Saab’s clientele. Always proving to be the master of his own craft, Elie Saab shines again in Paris Fashion Week.

Basic Makeup Tutorial: Blush, by Hala Ajam

Basic Makeup Tutorial: Blush, by Hala Ajam

This is another article from my book Face-To-Face which you can order online.

Blush

Blush enhances and compliments ones natural skin tone; and can give you different types of looks if applied correctly.

A Natural Look

Apply peach, coral and pink shades of blush to the apple of the cheeks to create a flushed and healthy glow. Of course go for the color that best suits your skin color.

Dramatic Look

To create and enhance cheekbones, apply blusher just under the cheekbones using a natural skin-tone color only.  If suitable, go a shade or two darker to really sculpt and define, keeping in mind that the darker you go the more important it is to blend the lines together.

A few tricks: If you apply and blend upwards toward the hairline, this will elongate the face.  If you blend downwards towards the jaw line, this will make the face appear thinner.  Ultimately, the shape of your face will determine what looks best in terms of application.

Playful Look

Play with the color of blush and its application as much as you like to create a truly personal look, looking like your favorite star.  However, it is important not to go overboard with colors and quantity.

Basic Makeup Tutorial: Powder, by Hala Ajam

Basic Makeup Tutorial: Powder, by Hala Ajam

This is another article from my book Face-To-Face which you can order online.

Powder

There are many types of powder, but the ones listed are the ones mostly used.  It is important to know each one and its purpose.

Loose Powder will set the makeup and cover any oily or shiny areas of the face.  To apply: use a big brush to distribute the powder evenly over the face.  Gently tap the side of the brush to remove any excess powder before dusting the face. For a thicket effect use a powder puff. Choose a color that is the same as your foundation or a translucent one.

Compact Powder provides full coverage creating a velvety look.  It can be used over foundation if more coverage is necessary and is a great option for ladies who lead a fast paced life and do not have the time to apply a full face of makeup.

Bronzing Powder gives a natural glow to the skin.  When applied correctly, it can make the skin appear ‘sun-kissed.’  It is important to use sparingly as too much can give the skin an unnatural orange glow.  Men can also use this product to enhance their skin tone on special occasions. Keep an eye on the good quality ones.

Pro Tip:

Apply your bronzer where you know the sun hits your face first when you’re naturally tanning. This way your face will look healthy and glow without looking like it’s made up.

Iridescent Powder, like gold and silver can be used to highlight certain areas of the face and body. Lightly dusting a gold-based powder on the top of cheekbones will create a beautiful luminous effect to brighten the face.  It can also be used on the collarbone, shoulder blades and arms to highlight and add sparkle. Instead of investing in this kind of powder you can easily use your eye shadows with the same colors.

Pro Tip

Use a little amount of loose powder under the eyes before applying eye shadow, as it will catch any loose specks of shadow that may fall.  When your eye makeup is complete, simply sweep away the excess powder and in doing so you will also discard any remnants that may have fallen.
