Val Garland MAC cosmetics MasterClass In London

London is the place where all artists meet and inspire one another. In a special Master makeup event presented by Val Garland, a group of makeup artists who are united in their passion for makeup made a huge impact on exchanging ideas and opinions in the art of makeup. Val Garland is well known for the creative sculpture art in each photo she presents. The photo itself is a piece of art.

The room was amazing and very inspiring. I met many makeup artists from all over the world, 2 from Milano, 2 from Sweden, 1 from Denmark and many more.

However, we were like 20 people, we left the hotel to the cocktail reception; it was freezing when we arrived and there was like 100 makeup artists waiting in line to get inside. We mingled at the reception with various nationalities and different background until it was a time to take a seat and let the show begin.

Basic Makeup Tutorial: Blush, by Hala Ajam

Basic Makeup Tutorial: Blush, by Hala Ajam

This is another article from my book Face-To-Face which you can order online.

Blush

Blush enhances and compliments ones natural skin tone; and can give you different types of looks if applied correctly.

A Natural Look

Apply peach, coral and pink shades of blush to the apple of the cheeks to create a flushed and healthy glow. Of course go for the color that best suits your skin color.

Dramatic Look

To create and enhance cheekbones, apply blusher just under the cheekbones using a natural skin-tone color only.  If suitable, go a shade or two darker to really sculpt and define, keeping in mind that the darker you go the more important it is to blend the lines together.

A few tricks: If you apply and blend upwards toward the hairline, this will elongate the face.  If you blend downwards towards the jaw line, this will make the face appear thinner.  Ultimately, the shape of your face will determine what looks best in terms of application.

Playful Look

Play with the color of blush and its application as much as you like to create a truly personal look, looking like your favorite star.  However, it is important not to go overboard with colors and quantity.

Basic Makeup Tutorial: Powder, by Hala Ajam

Basic Makeup Tutorial: Powder, by Hala Ajam

This is another article from my book Face-To-Face which you can order online.

Powder

There are many types of powder, but the ones listed are the ones mostly used.  It is important to know each one and its purpose.

Loose Powder will set the makeup and cover any oily or shiny areas of the face.  To apply: use a big brush to distribute the powder evenly over the face.  Gently tap the side of the brush to remove any excess powder before dusting the face. For a thicket effect use a powder puff. Choose a color that is the same as your foundation or a translucent one.

Compact Powder provides full coverage creating a velvety look.  It can be used over foundation if more coverage is necessary and is a great option for ladies who lead a fast paced life and do not have the time to apply a full face of makeup.

Bronzing Powder gives a natural glow to the skin.  When applied correctly, it can make the skin appear ‘sun-kissed.’  It is important to use sparingly as too much can give the skin an unnatural orange glow.  Men can also use this product to enhance their skin tone on special occasions. Keep an eye on the good quality ones.

Pro Tip:

Apply your bronzer where you know the sun hits your face first when you’re naturally tanning. This way your face will look healthy and glow without looking like it’s made up.

Iridescent Powder, like gold and silver can be used to highlight certain areas of the face and body. Lightly dusting a gold-based powder on the top of cheekbones will create a beautiful luminous effect to brighten the face.  It can also be used on the collarbone, shoulder blades and arms to highlight and add sparkle. Instead of investing in this kind of powder you can easily use your eye shadows with the same colors.

Pro Tip

Use a little amount of loose powder under the eyes before applying eye shadow, as it will catch any loose specks of shadow that may fall.  When your eye makeup is complete, simply sweep away the excess powder and in doing so you will also discard any remnants that may have fallen.

Basic Makeup Tutorial: Foundation, by Hala Ajam

Basic Makeup Tutorial: Foundation, by Hala Ajam

This is another article from my book Face-To-Face which you can order online.

Foundation creates a base for the rest of your makeup to be applied to.

Choosing the right color is most important and fortunately very simple to do.  Apply a line of foundation from your cheek to your jaw line in front of the mirror; take a step back to see if it blends well with your natural skin tone and color.  If so, you have found the correct shade and if you see it then it’s not for you so try again!

It is also important to remember that, like your wardrobe, makeup is seasonal too.  You should not use the same foundation in the winter as in the summer.  A healthy tanned skin deserves more of a golden

hued foundation and will look far more natural, not to mention flattering, than the chalky look that occurs when a paler, winter shade of foundation is applied over a tan.

As with concealer, foundation can also smooth out skin discoloration.  A light tinted moisturizer can offer enough coverage if you are lucky to have perfect skin.

Pro Tip: Apply a primer to your face before foundation to make your skin look smooth. It will help create a clear look.

Types of Foundation

The foundation you use will depend on certain factors including personal choice, the ‘look’ you hope to achieve.  There are different types of foundations but the ones listed are the ones I use. Each creates a different look, and should be used according to skin type.

Cream Base Foundations are best used when looking for total coverage and a very polished ‘finished’ look.  As it is the heaviest of foundations, it can cover small scars, broken blood vessels and veins.

Liquid Foundations offer medium-range cover and are overall, a very good weight for day-to-day use.  It is important to learn how to blend well, as natural daylight can be far harsher than the indoor light we might normally use to apply our makeup in.  It will be far more telling of any flaws in application.  Be sure to use your fingers to blend all the way beneath the jawbone, up to the hairline.

Water Proof Liquid Foundation and Sheer Foundation are the easiest to apply and blend. They offer light, translucent coverage that will enhance the skins natural glow.

My favorite trick is to mix a cream foundation with a moisturizer, keeping the coverage, but lightening the texture.

Pro Tip:  To avoid shine, blot the skin with a tissue for a few seconds to allow it to lift any excess oil or sweat from the skin.  This will leave the skin with a lovely matte finish.
