A Flick of a Brush

During an editorial fashion shoot, everyone involved has a specific job to do. The stylist will determine the theme of the shoot and overall look; the photographer is responsible for capturing what the stylist envisions; and the hair stylist and makeup artist will collaborate to create the perfect look reflective of the fashion and theme of the shoot. This process is repeated again and again to create a sequence of differently themed shoots.

The stylist may opt for a flowery, 70’s flare for one shoot, then go to the extreme of glitter and glamour for the next! The objective is one: to shed light on a new product or a specific trendy color in makeup, which doesn’t necessarily mean that women must wear the same makeup we express. Creating a variety of looks to compliment the array of clothes and themes can indeed be a challenge. I fond it helpful to have a certain look in mind, which I can build from.

After working for several years with the same team at Laha magazine, I have built a relationship built on trust and understanding with the stylist, Caroline Cassia. She translates the idea she has for a photo shoot into reality through bringing together all the right elements, and she totally trust me to change the models’ look from a shoot to another. The result has always been great pictures that people see every week in the same magazine for the past five years.

Shading and Highlighting

Shading and Highlighting

Shading and Highlighting by Hala Ajam

When using foundation, it is important to remember that its use gpoes far beyond covering the occasional imperfections. Not only can it camouflage skin’s flows, such as discoloration and blemishes but also, when use correctly it can transform the shape of the face. It can be used to add dimension and countour to our features.

One of my specialties as a makeup artist to manipulate the contours of the face through clever shading and highlighting. By doing this, I create an illusion of dimension and structure, and place a greater emphasis on your best features.

To do this, there are two different shade of foundation that are needed: one that is lighter than your skin tone and a darker shade. The lighter tone will enhance certain feautures by highlighting and reflecting lilght from them, while the darker will absorb the light and create a somewhat sunken effect. For example, if you have a fat nose, shadow the length of the bridge using the darker shade. By doing so, you will create a narrowing and defined effect. Another example to create more defined cheekbones, darken underneath the cheekbone area and blend downwards. This will create the desired depth to the area giving the illusion that the cheekbone is produing more that it is.

Basic Makeup Tutorial: Blush, by Hala Ajam

Basic Makeup Tutorial: Blush, by Hala Ajam

This is another article from my book Face-To-Face which you can order online.

Blush

Blush enhances and compliments ones natural skin tone; and can give you different types of looks if applied correctly.

A Natural Look

Apply peach, coral and pink shades of blush to the apple of the cheeks to create a flushed and healthy glow. Of course go for the color that best suits your skin color.

Dramatic Look

To create and enhance cheekbones, apply blusher just under the cheekbones using a natural skin-tone color only.  If suitable, go a shade or two darker to really sculpt and define, keeping in mind that the darker you go the more important it is to blend the lines together.

A few tricks: If you apply and blend upwards toward the hairline, this will elongate the face.  If you blend downwards towards the jaw line, this will make the face appear thinner.  Ultimately, the shape of your face will determine what looks best in terms of application.

Playful Look

Play with the color of blush and its application as much as you like to create a truly personal look, looking like your favorite star.  However, it is important not to go overboard with colors and quantity.
